Everybody Wants to Hide
02:46

Everybody Wants to Hide
I once stared in the city of idols
I once argued with an honest man
I once danced to shack the hunger
stood still when everyone ran
once sang proudly in a choir
once bartered with the thieves
once drank wine from the offering
so drunk I couldn't see
Everyone's got crops to keep
Everyone's got money on the lie
Everyone shivers when the cold sets in
Everybody wants to hide...everybody wants to hide
I'll come home but my arms are heavy
I'm more lies than I am the truth
would you keep me around if you knew me
one day hero, next day fool
Everyone was laughing
the fabric on your dress was worn
I saw you later in the hallway
crying on the telephone
Everyone's got crops to keep
Everyone's got money on the lie
Everyone shivers when the cold sets in
Everybody wants to hide...everybody wants to hide
Storm cloud blowing over
I held my hand out to catch the rain
I was a beggar at the mission
A spark waiting on the flame
Everyone's got crops to keep
Everyone's got money on the lie
Everyone shivers when the cold sets in
Everybody wants to hide...everybody wants to hide

Burning Time
04:29
|

Burning Time
It was the sound of a wounded rumour
It was a creeping of a careless wind
running past the burning back top
now we’re someplace we’ve never been
we got tangled up like lovers do
in the haunting sounds of the past
now you’re kicking around at all of your questions
I keep trying to confess.
We can keep burning time, yeah we can keep burning time
but it ain’t , no it ain’t going to keep us warm.
It was love that lost to loyalty
but it was I that took the fight
there’s a straw broom that keeps on sweeping up
all the pieces we’ve left behind.
All our sins have been salted
so our river now runs with brine
and we found the game and the gamble
now it’s comfort that’s the crime
We can keep burning time, yeah we can keep burning time
but it ain’t , no it ain’t going to keep us warm.
there’s a tea kettle whistling in the kitchen
leaves rustling out on the porch
I was once singing at your harbor
now i’m howling at your door.

Long Parade
03:16
|

Long Parade
I can still hear the voices singing
and the dancing between the trees
before we were hero's of honor
we were pirates of a distant sea
the future has found a new name
but it's past still haunts this town
your heart is dressed in amour
mine is drunk in the lounge
It's going to be a long ride
It's going to be a heavy rain
It's going to be a hound dog moon
that lights up our blue and grey
It's going to be some late nights
It's going to be a lot of give and take
you can call it a slow march
I'll call it a long parade
I pulled a faded map from my pocket
none of the lines made any sense
I took a road into a wine-colored village
then a path to where the branches bend
I threw my old hat into the fire
I watched the flames take the crown
The shadows of the night went running
the lighting whipped the ground
It's going to be a long ride
It's going to be a heavy rain
It's going to be a hound dog moon
that lights up our blue and grey
It's going to be some late nights
It's going to be a lot of give and take
you can call it a slow march
I'll call it a long parade
there was an echo in the darkness
I crawled into catch a look
there was a mother crying at the alter
there was a priest praying to the earth
I left my sorrow near the river
In a burial of broken stones
I tried to break all my patterns
but they were stitched together to strong
It's going to be a long ride
It's going to be a heavy rain
It's going to be a hound dog moon
that lights up our blue and grey
It's going to be some late nights
It's going to be a lot of give and take
you can call it a slow march
I'll call it a long parade

Been Here Before
04:15
|
|||
Been Here before
I’ve been here before
I didn’t like it much back then
so I just close my eyes
and let my blood run thin
I’ve been walking for miles
until the day turns to black
it’s hard to stand tall
when you want to fall flat
you don’t feel it anymore
your heart don’t race when my key hits the door
and you’ve tried and you’ve tried before
but this house ain’t your home
It’s not what you took
it’s what you left behind
it’s not what you said
it’s what you couldn’t deny
you don’t feel it anymore
your heart don’t race when my key hits the door
and you’ve tried and you’ve tried before
but this house ain’t your home
I’ve fallen on my shield
in this city of rust and stone
now I’m begging with the birds
for blood and bones
you don’t feel it anymore
your heart don’t race when my key hits the door
and you’ve tried and you’ve tried before
but this house ain’t your home

Where the House Use to Sit
The days grew long and your heart grew dark
near the factory and the east town park
knocking on the doors, just trying to get in
but there ain’t nothing, there ain’t no work to give
-
From stone to brick, from brick to rust
lost in the dream till the dream went bust
voice on the radio sings soft and blue
if you ride with me, I’ll ride with you
-
The yards full of birds with the house use to sit
can’t remember where the money all went
folks gather around as the rail cars pass
they toast to the evening, but they drink for the past
-
In a vacant lot shines a stone colored moon
lights up the evening as the guitars tune
sing around the fire, till the fire runs cold
they sing for the city, but they cheer for the road
The yards full of birds with the house use to sit
can’t remember where the money all went
folks gather around as the rail cars pass
they toast to the evening, but they drink for the past
they took the wine from the pastor’s house
drank on the roof, till the roof gave out
feasting on bread, till their bellies went fat
they fall and stumble, then lay back and laugh
The yards full of birds with the house use to sit
can’t remember where the money all went
folks gather around as the rail cars pass
they toast to the evening, but they drink for the past

Like We Used to
03:45
|
|||
lIke We Used to
Our language was lost, you said you forgot
Your words lying deep in a cave
And it's hard to defend all these silences
when we both really have nothing to say
I feel for you, my dear
You let me in, then disappear
But my heart is as empty as yours
And if you ever come home, bring the blood and the bones
And I'll sweep the leaves off the porch
And we'll talk about it all like we used to
Sleep away the day like we used to
Spend way too much money like we used to
You had stones around your neck
Summertime on a deck
By the water, just after the flood
And we bantered like bells, on the shore and the swells
Until you pulled me down in the mud
I couldn't see in the dark, but I could still find your scars
And I wondered what happened to you
The kettle would whine and I'd shiver sometimes
When you told me what you had to do
When the snow has set in we can do it all again
Keep those wolves howling high in the pines
Let the fire take turns, let it warm first, then burn
Let the smoke blur the shapes and the lines
We're not young anymore, but we still can pretend
We're not wild, but we're also not tame
And if you don't want to stay, It don’t have to be that way
You can leave just as quick as you came

I'll Bring You Back
03:31
|
|||
If you curse the wind, I’ll damn the rain
If you spark the fire, I’ll guard the flame
If you want it dark, well, I’ll paint it black,
but if you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back
If you seek a trail, I’ll clear the leaves
if you want to run now, I’ll help you leave
If you want the high road, well, I’ll light up the path
but if you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back
If you set for sail, I’ll wait at shore
If you want to fight, I got your war
and if roll the dice, I’ll bet on the chance.
that If you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back
If you tell the tales, I’ll pour the wine
If you want to slow it down now, let’s take the time
If you pull me in, well I’ll stumble and dance
but if you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back
If you set for sail, I’ll wait at shore
If you want to fight, I got your war
and if roll the dice, I’ll bet on the chance.
If you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back
If you curse the wind, I’ll damn the rain
If you spark the fire, I’ll guard the flame
If you want it dark, well, I’ll paint it black,
but if you fall behind babe…I’ll bring you back

Satellites
03:54
|
|||
If you bring the tears
I’ll fetch the Jar
If you count the sorrows
I’ll count the stars
-
So set out the scraps
chase the wolf from the door
if you lost your alibi
here’s a thousand more
-
Bring along the space
I’ll make the time
and then hold on,
hold on like the dark holds the satellites
-
I’ll walk the steel
if you’ll catch my fall
and if you whisper softly
I won’t speak at all
-
so place all your bets
I’ll raise the steaks
you can call my bluff
you’ve already seen it in my face
-
Bring along the space
I’ll make the time
and then hold on,
hold on like the dark holds the satellites
_
If I named the stars
would that make you smile
If I leaned in
could I stay for a while

Higher Ground
03:19
|
|||
Higher Ground
I listened to the water, where the spirits sing
I got lost in the field where the lighting breaths
my sins hang heavy there they ache and howl
won’t you help me now darling get to higher ground
-
I got drunk in the tavern, where the lion drinks
I slept on the shore where the raven dreams
I gave all my coins to some wild haired gal
won’t you help me now darling get to higher ground
-
I hid in the grove to watch the darkness pray
I walked to the cave where the wild gods lay
I played the queen of hearts agains the devil’s crown
won’t you help me now darling get to higher ground
-
I sat for days in the rattle snake den
I walked the path to where the forest ends
I screamed your name under orion’s belt
won’t you help me now darling get to higher ground
-
I didn’t have enough water to clean the blood
I got lost in the story of the wounded son
I begged at the alter in a junkman’s town
won’t you help me now darling get to higher ground
-
The war is over and the ships are home
no one knows who’s alive or gone
there’s a small hand shaking, so I reach on down
everyones looking for that higher ground.
seems everyones looking for that higher ground

Into the Mud
03:05
|
|||
I held my hand out into the fire
Trying to catch a flame
we build ourselves an alter
out of old wood and a rusted blade
-
I didn’t want to carry these secrets
too heavy for us to hold
I dragged them back into the city
but the found their way back home
-
I should’ve tipped my hat and been done with it
but under my skin I just buried it
_
the words I tried to use
were all messed up in broken thought
I was a lonely shivering dancing fool
shaking in a shaman’s hut
-
I could hear you screaming crazy
when I would hide out on my own
but I had thrown myself into the mud
of some darkness I’ve never known
-
I should’ve tipped my hat and been done with it
but under my skin I just buried it
-
Did I say too much
more than enough
was I running on fumes
instead of my heart
-
did I stumble in to
the dreamer’s den
now I’m back in the belly
of the beast again
-
I was a compass kid on the corner
drawing circles around a map
I had chased the rain through the valley
until I found the lighting branch
-
I went to see the healer
I had questions about the heart
she said anything I could ever tell you
ain’t ever going to be enough
-
I should’ve tipped my hat and been done with it
but under my skin I just buried it
-
I should’ve tipped my hat and been done with it
but under my skin I just buried it

Border Town
03:22
|

Border Town
I didn't have the faith to believe
I didn’t care for the crowd
but I wanted a guarantee
before the judge rang the bell
I was marked by the news
It was hard to believe the loss
It was greater than before
It was heavier than the war.
I’m back in the border town
I’m back in the border town
I’ve got my head down
deep in the border town.
I tried to loosen the gloves
but there was still blood in the ring
I tried to take a step back
but it still hurt to breath
Then your memory slipped in
But it wasn’t your voice I heard
I got my back against the ropes
my back against the ropes
I just want to go
back to the border town
back to the border town
I’ve got my head down
here in the border town.
I don’t want these dreams anymore
where I’m in a house I don’t know
where I’m wrestling with thieves
lord please
I'm back in the border town
